From the Helm

March 2017

My name is Jeff Dwight and I am the 2017 president of Rocky Mountain Classics. Rocky Mountain Classics is a chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society. We are one of the fifty-five chapters that make up the ACBS. I have been an ACBS member since 1999. My interest and passion for wood boats began during childhood and I feel very fortunate to own two 1950s era classic wood boats.

Rocky Mountain Classics currently has 96 members. Over the years our membership has ranged from the 80's to as high as 120 members. Our chapter covers a rather large geographic area. Our members mostly reside in Colorado although we have members in Montana, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, Texas, and even a few members who live east of the Mississippi.

The majority of the boats in our chapter are wood boats although there are a number of classic fiberglass boats as well. We welcome all the classics from canoes, sail craft and powered vessels in any material. Boats 25 years and older or replicas of classics designs are the core of our membership. That includes boats from 1992 or older. Members boats come in all forms. Some are restored condition by the skilled hands of some of our membership, others are in various stages of original condition. The use of these boats range from show displayed runabouts, classic cruisers, speed boats, hard used ski boats, sailboats, canoes, and utility/ fishing vessels.

Our members enjoy meeting new people and talking about their boats. Our chapter seeks out and welcomes new members. We have some very experienced and knowledgeable boaters in our group and some with far less knowledge and experience . We all enjoy being a resource to new boaters and new classic boat owners. Sometimes new boaters need some help and encouragement before launching and docking as well as with equipping and maintaining their boats and trailers.

If you already own or have an interest in owning a classic boat, feel free to attend any of our functions. All of our members will be happy to answer questions and more than likely will ask you if you would like to take a ride. Even if you don't want to own your own boat but just like to see them and hear them run, you are welcome to attend our events. Feel free to call me at any time if you have a question about our group or about our boats.
